This and that
Jul. 15th, 2004 08:08 pm Hurrr. Just woke up from a nap. Seem to be taking afternoon naps a lot more now. I was so tired last night from finishing "King Arthur" that I couldn't even bring myself to fix dinner until after 10 pm.
The big thing about "King Arthur"--oh, and by the way, I added two more mini-batches of icons of icons to the folder. The last entry on
m15m is about the icons, so hit that--is that I learned a lot about my "Movies in Fifteen Minutes" process. A lot. Namely, I have to gun the things out in the 5-6 hours immediately after I see the movie, or I start to forget what happened, and then it takes me days to poke at the keyboard and go, "Whaaaa... I can't... zzzz." "Van Helsing"? Five hours. "Troy"? Six hours. "Harry Potter"? Four days of bitching and moaning and premature senility. I'm sayin'.
Which is why I should stop going to see movies on Sundays, because I have "Six Feet Under" to watch that night and that's just no good. But it's an extremely helpful discovery in terms of writing the book. Particularly since they want manuscript on October 1st, DAMN.
(On the upside, Orion has a v. pretty new website. We're still in the contract phase [i.e., "Get off your ass and put the signed contracts in the mail, Miss Jones, plzkthnx"], so I'm not on it or anything. I'm just saying.)
You know, I think I have developed a theory. The "King Arthur" threads at
Or you could also argue that the reason HP fans are so tetchy is because 1) their fandom generally includes way younger fans who are more easily riled and 2) the series isn't finished, and so there's lots of shipper angst about who's going to end up with whom. Shut up, I like my theory better.
Of course, the acid test would be for me to put up "Return of the King in Fifteen Minutes" and see what kind of hell breaks out, I suppose. But I'll have to see what's going in the book before I can tell you what I can post online.
Now that I have Photoshop and my icons suck less... I don't know if anyone even cares about Troy or Van Helsing anymore, but for those of you still using 15M icons... you deserve better.
Troy icons (some new, some just improved; 19 total, take whatever you want)
Van Helsing icons, all old but improved (17 total, take whatever you want)

Date: 2004-07-15 06:12 pm (UTC)And, I have an icon suggestion? ::raises hand timidly:: You might have done something to this extent, as my computer is being the previously mentioned asshat and the icon page didn't fully load, but a nice icon idea might be a picture of Arthur with the text: "A noble cause: MY FOOT UP YOUR ASS!". I know it isn't the exact text from your parody, but it was the one part that had me in stitches for AGES, as opposed to stitches for ten minutes.

And since I'm watching ROTK right now, I was just thinking a m15m of that would be fab. I hope to read it someday, in one form or another.

Date: 2004-07-15 06:36 pm (UTC)For some reason there's a huge controversy over unreadable text right now, at various communities/journals I've been past. I can understand it as a design element, but... really, you need to make sure it's really, really readable or really, really not; otherwise people can't tell what you're trying to do. (/gets down off soapbox)

Date: 2004-07-15 06:21 pm (UTC)Here, here! I tell ya, the man-harem will come in handy when I come to rule the world.
HP fans tend to be very snippy, go to some mugglenet boards and you can see. LotR fans sometimes tend to make fun of themselves, myself included. The HP movies aren't low on hot guys (Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, David Thewlis etc.), but are high on a young audience who easily take offense like crazy, even to stuff Rowling herself posts (OMG Draco leik is not teh ebal!). Give 'em time and they'll get used to it...with hope.
But yes, Hot Guys=peace. Until we begin fighting over them.
Dude, I saw Spider-Man 2 and was thinking "Dude, this is movie in fifteen minute fodder." Because it really is.

Date: 2004-07-15 07:16 pm (UTC)I think part of the problem with the Harry Potter/hot guys thing is... well, I think the boys will grow up to be hot, but the men are... well, they're the Discerning Woman's Hot. And even then they take the Discerning Woman's Hot and hide it under greasy fright wigs, Hitler porno 'staches, etc. Harry Potter--and I say this as a fan--needs some blazing, unadulterated hot before we will be able to achieve world peace.
Or they can just keep dressing great British character actors badly and we can keep on bickering. It's all the same to me. ;)

Date: 2004-07-15 06:22 pm (UTC)So my question is: Do you like it all love and light? Or do you wish for a bit of wankiness?
Personally, I think it's that as your Movies in 15 Minutes have caught on, people have caught on to the fact that they're supposed to be funny, that you do this to multiple movies. Not just OMGthismovieissooobadImustmockit!!1!

Date: 2004-07-15 07:33 pm (UTC)With just about anything else I write--like original fiction--I really like constructive criticism. With these, though... it really just feels like backseat driving ("You know what you shoulda said? You shoulda said THIS!"). Of course I'll be revising for the book, and I'll have specific people read parodies with the intent of having them give criticism, but... I don't know. The ones I post online seem like something that ought to be fun, and if you think it's too long or "one-note," well... what am I supposed to do about it?

Date: 2004-07-15 06:26 pm (UTC)I linked to this m15m on www.gamefaqs.com and most of the people found it amusing but one of the guys said this
"There's really no excuse for it to be that long or long-winded, especially considering how one-note it is with the humor.
She should take lessons from this guy:

I don't knwo you were just talking about hearing how everyone thought it was the best ever so I thought you would want to hear some different opinions!
I don't agree though

Date: 2004-07-15 07:22 pm (UTC)But yeah. I do appreciate different opinions. I was reading over "Van Helsing," and it is much shorter than the others, and I could stand to cut down a bit. Still, it's always charming to be told you "need to take lessons" from someone else. ;)

What a wonderful plan! World peace and something pretty to look at! That's the kind of world I want to live in! Besides arguing over the hotness takes away from precious drooling time.
