All right. (Is there some unwritten law that I must begin an entry with "All right" or "So"?) The weather is better today; I feel a little better today; however, I have spent the day on business email. I have to write up another proposal. Hatching new plans, however. First of all, I have a pretteh new banner I've made for my Clix account (is the credited artwork borrowing kosher?):

Next: I was a Dell girl. Now I'm thinking of switching over to Hewlett Packard. I need 1) lots of storage, 2) lots of horsepower, and 3) lots of stain-resistance. Seriously, poor Betsy has suffered much hardship in her five years on this earth. Aside from the fact that I am definitely a PC girl and not switching over to a Mac--thoughts? Recommendations? Warnings?

Then: I'm not saying anyone gives a shit about my attempts to impose some discipline on my lazy self; I'm saying that other people might be going through the same thing and might like to see how someone else copes with it. Which is to lead up to saying: I am not good with schedules. I need them desperately; but I totally cannot impose them on myself. I tend to accomplish things in obsessive bursts, but really, if you're going to run things with "Daily" in the title, that ain't gonna cut it. So, my happy, probably-not-going-to-work plan is this: Let's try updating the Digest on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. Given the way I do it, there's no point in really even starting before six or seven pm my time, because I'm on the east coast and the other sites haven't finished updating for the day. I'd already instituted that--starting the updates at night rather than pointlessly dithering on them all day--as a time-saving measure, and it seems to have worked somewhat.

So. Then we have the Days recaps at 1 pm. That cuts the day in half--you have the morning before and then the afternoon after (and before the Digest updates). Surely, surely, I can spend the morning on email/correspondence/craziness and maybe even get some exercise in, too. Then you have the afternoon to work on writing and update Short Attention Span Theater as random new bites come in, plus two weeknights where I don't have to worry about the Digest anyway. (Really, if you update it every day, you run out of things to talk about. The other sites are the daily; I'm the digest.) That gives me specific spaces in which to write, without pinning me down too formally to a schedule, and still allows for specific things to get done.

This is so totally not going to work, is it?

After that: I'm putting together a hub site for all your Cleolinda Jones needs--a place with all my various blogs and sites and crap on one page, plus an easier-to-remember URL for Black Ribbon. Does this smack of megalomania? Absolutely. But then, I've always believed that if you want to be something, you should go ahead and act like you are that thing--as in, if you aspire to be a professional author, go ahead and act like a professional, not "go ahead and act like a presumptuous asshat." It's not that I think I deserve an official "shrine" or anything; it's that I've got enough stuff floating around on the internet now that it seems vaguely appropriate to have a Site o' Me. Kind of like a giant résumé/CV. Also, I totally need a lair from which to launch my sekrit plan to take over the world. Jellus? Get your own, then. You deserve ialsohaveagiantego.com, too.

Speaking of my kudzu-like creep over the entire intarweb, I got an invitation today to post "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Fifteen Minutes" on Fiction Alley. I don't know why my wanka spidey sense started tingling, but...

i have a hp laptop, and i love it. it hasn't given me much trouble thus far, except for the cd/dvd-r drive, which doesn't seem to want to play dvd's anymore, but other than that, it's great.

Eh, go for it. I had excellent results with Schnoogle and its affiliates.

And STAY WITH DELL. *thwacks self* Sorry. Dell is cheap, reasonably reliable, and it's easy enough to wipe XP and WordPerfect off any new Dell and replace it with 2000. HP has been, in my experience, totally bitchy and prone to random fits of the computer vapours.

The idea of a Cleolinda site is a happy one. You are brilliant, and anything which will aid in distributing your brilliance to the masses is a Good Thing.

I was looking into buying a computer a couple of months ago and asked some of my techie friends. To a one they recommended Dell and they all told me to steer completely clear of Hewlett Packards and Compaqs. They are apparently notorious for being made of substandard parts and their warranties are (I'm told) laughable. Considering the rigamarole that I had to go through trying to get drivers for my HP stuff when I upgraded to XP, I'm inclined to agree.

More than likely it is the same unwritten law that I must begin transitional sentences with "But yeah"

Also, I totally need a lair from which to launch my sekrit plan to take over the world.

Dude, megalomania is my thing! Future Tyrant Queen of the World and whatnot? I've got it all figured out, and in the movies this would be where I tell you my devious plan of hostile takeover, but I'm smarter than that *points to temple* Mwahahahahahahahahaha::cough::hahahahaa! But I like you, and thus you get a country and man-harem of your choosing when I rule the world.

You deserve ialsohaveagiantego.com, too.

If I knew how to do stuff like that, I would. But I can barely customize my lj and that takes hours.

Speaking of Dell, how are they on maintenance and whatnot? I have a Gateway but they've closed all their stores and the last time I needed their help (during the Great Computer Disaster of '03) they said the only thing they could do was wipe my hard drive clean *moment of silence*

Ooh, hub site good. I don't think it's megalomania at all, and you're right about acting like a professional. I like it when people I read have nicely organised links, it makes the stalking that little bit easier.

I have an HP laptop, and I love it to bits. It's mostly the design (and sadly they have updated them), it's nice and curvy so bits don't stick into me when I'm emailing in bed, and it's dark blue and silver. I've had it for two years now, and the only problems were my own fault after spilling a pint glass of water into it, AND it bounced back good as new! Oh, and the spyware I can't get rid of after looking at porn. Mine's a Pavillion, I think, and it wasn't too pricey. Very durable, pretty good storage (and upgrades easy too), blue flashing lights on my mousepad.

I just got me a new comp for about $600 (160GB harddrive, 512MB RAM, no monitor though). Just bought the parts, going to put it together, but you can get a really good computer that way for half to one third the price of getting a preassembled one. If you can find someone to help you connect everything, that'd be the way to go, since plenty of people could help you get the software you needed. Even if you have to buy the software, it'd still be cheaper.

A very good place for parts is www.mwave.com if you want to check it out. Good luck finding a comp =)

It's called a site collective/hub/main home page, and lots of people (with a whole lot less content then you) have them. And you need one desperately. :) I was trying to figure out all the sites you have, and so many point to one thing and not another that it was mightily confusing.

So yes, I support the site hub notion. cleolinda.com isn't taken. :]

Have you thought about Alienware? They make primarily gaming computers. So they are heavy on the horsepower and made to withstand tough treatment. Plus, they come in pretteh colors, which should appeal to you. ;D I've also heard that they have pretty decent support if you need it. I currently own a Dell and I think my next comp is going to be an Alienware. Check out their site at alienware.com.

OMG stay away from the horror that is Hewlett Packard! My last pc was a HP (never had so many problems with a computer). My newest pc is a HP, but it's too early to tell if there is going to be problems (I give it time).

Dells or Gateways are the best to get!

I like Dell's service, actually. When Betsy had her near-death experience two years ago, they helped me go through and manually retrieve the most important files with floppy disks from the DOS setup screen.

And THEN we erased the whole thing.

I used to have an HP but it always froze/crashed on me and it was really, really slow. I got a Dell last summer (for considerably cheaper) and I love it so much more than HP. I do miss Stefan but my new nameless Dell is much better.

So yeah, I'd stick with Dell. But that's me.

Don't go with Hewlett Packard. Not only is the computer absolute shite and automatically deletes crap because of it's "virtual memory"...the customer service people are jerks.

They make you hold while your telebill rings up $12 or more dollars for a few minutes.

They've screwed over more than one person in my family. :(

I have a VAIO and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE It. It plays my DVDs, cds, and doesn't delete my shit. :)

I don't know what everyone else has said (because I'm too lazy to read it, I'm afraid) but I want to either start or join a protest against an HP. I've never heard anything good of them and I use them at work, without ever being impressed. Having said that, a desktop's pretty much a desktop these days and you should be able to pick up something fast and smart for very little money, really.

If you're thinking about a laptop, think IBM and Toshiba.

And that's my nerdish advice for the day.

(I'd like to see you end all your posts with 'so' and 'all right' - that'd be a challenge.)

Totally chiming in with the Dell love. Unless you're getting a laptop. And then I'm going to tell you that I have sixty horror stories regarding Dell laptops in law school (one for each of my classmates that had a Dell, although some of my classmates got more than one horror story because they had more than one Dell). Get something else if you're going to get a laptop. But if you're replacing your desktop, Dell is absolutely the way to go.

And if you've got a sekrit plan to take over the world, can I be first in line to be a hench...person? I WANNA BE A MINION!

I love my VAIO laptop. It's, like, a thousand in laptop years, and except for having to replace a screen when the baggage handlers broke it (don't ask), I have had no troubles with it.

My advice, build your own; if you don't know how, have a computer-savvy friend do it for you. All top-tier OEMs use cheapest possible components in their systems - that includes Dell, HP, eMachines, etc. Some are worse than the others though, which is definitely the case with HP. If you absolutely must go with a brandname, get IBM - they do have a reasonably good track record.

Good quality prebuilt computers come from niche vendors such as Alienware and Falcon Northwest. They are, however, a good deal more expensive than top tier OEMs' offerings, both because of higher overhead involved in lower volume production and much higher standard of quality.

Still, the best way is to build your own. Antec Sonata or Compucase LX-6A19 case, Intel D875PBZ motherboard, Intel Pentium 4 2.8C, 2x512MB of Samsung DDR400 (PC3200) RAM, ATI Radeon 9200 if you're not into games, Radeon 9600 Pro or 9800 Pro (or an All-in-Wonder if you want integrated video in/video out/TV tuner/remote control) if you are, a Samsung or Seagate hard drive in the 120-160GB range, a DVD-ROM+CD-RW combo or DVD burner of your choice, and you're set.

And I think a central hub ofr all your stuff will help me use it as a secret base of operations when I hack the CIA's mainframe keep up with all your goings-on.

For a desktop, definitely go Dell. My family's used them for years, and they've always been lovely, well-behaved things. Not like the piece of crap Gateway we tried out once.

As for laptops, I've had a VAIO for about four years and it's never given me any trouble. Except I liked it better when it was running Windows ME instead of XP.
