Honestly, the characterization seemed hard to find for me in the sense that every action of the Pevensie kids - except for maybe the first scene - seemed purely mandated by plot, and cobbled together into a non-cohesive whole when it came to presenting a picture of the person undertaking the actions. To the extent that it was hard to see characterization behind the actions, because they were so, as you say, Because It Is Our Theme. And that doesn't leave the actors with a lot to work with.
