On the topic of pingbacks, I asked this (http://helens78.dreamwidth.org/860769.html?thread=3034721#cmt3034721) in helens78's entry last night, and if you send the link through a link shortener like bit.ly, then you won't get a pingback. helens78 thinks it might be because "livejournal.com" doesn't appear in the URL, which would make sense. So, if you're really concerned about pingbacks and privacy, that's one workaround.
