Re: your mom's knee - this is WEIRD, because I had to deal with almost the SAME EXACT THING back in the summer of 2000. Mom was 57 and had to have both knees replaced, and she opted to have them both done at once to minimize the time off work. I didn't have my license either even though I was, um, over 30 and kind of scared to drive. Thankfully we found a good driving school; not sure if that's an option for you, but I found it less stressful than having a family member (namely, Mom) teach me. And once you get over the initial OMG I'M DRIVING A CAR AND THESE PEOPLE ON THE ROAD ARE F**KING INSANE, it does get easier. I've found that late bloomers tend to be safer drivers, maybe because we're more aware of the risks and don't think we're immortal.
Re: Lizzie - could AVG be the problem? I put AVG on my laptop after I got it in July of last year, and it crashed it in August after an update - had to replace the whole hard drive. It might be something in a recent update that's making Lizzie act cantankerous.

Good luck to you and your mom!
