Having similar difficulties on the wrapping front--I am so terrible at figuring out what needs to be cut--I've recently taken to swathing my presents in tissue paper wrappers. Comes in all sort of pretty colours, makes nice rustling sounds, imperfections seem to be less noticeable when its a bit crinkly. Also I have an excuse to swaddle it in layers to conceal sloppy measurements; got to keep it completely opaque!
