I think that all has to do with how fast in general computer hardware advances (I remember how annoyed I was when my family upgraded to a computer that didn't have a floppy drive. Good times). My dad bought a little netbook recently and everything about it, RAM/hard drive space/battery life/etc, is better than my heavy, four year old laptop by a huge factor. And it cost probably a third of what my computer did when I bought it. And it weighs the same as like, a small hardcover book. I'm sure that in another four years it will all sound as incredibly low power and expensive as my laptop feels now when compared to the newest thing.
(Not that it stops my dad from rubbing it in my face now of course. And then I made the mistake of referring to the netbook as his Precious in front of him. Now he does the whole routine whenever the two of us and it are in the same room together. These are the downsides to living in a Nerdy Household.)
