external harddrives are so worth it. i have an... unfortunate situation where my harddrive dies every few months. i have an iomega drive ( people always think i plugged a usb cord into a flask, it's hilarious ) and they just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. i have a mac, and i just plug it in and it backs up automatically. it is awesome.
