I have to admit, when I read that they'd never heard of it in Germany, my first reaction was, "really? in every tiny little corner of Germany? You checked?" Germany: not homogenous. And it wouldn't be the first time that some very regionalized little tradition from the Old World gained wider currency due to an immigrant population in America, even if most of the home-country hasn't heard of it.

(See also: try to ask some Brits about eggnog. They invented it. But any number of Brits have never even heard of it, these days.)
