As a sociologist, I'd just like to note that virtually all the research in the original article was cited out of context, frequently in ways that were probably directly cautioned against by the researchers themselves. Furthermore, the one spot in the article where he actually acknowledges that correlation /= causation is about the beneficial effects of marriage on health, which research has repeatedly demonstrated are NOT solely a selection effect; there is in fact causation there. And it's a much stronger effect for men than for women (and men who are widowed then have way higher mortality).
