SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAAAAAAY!!

So we had a metric ton of awful crap football food for dinner--I say that lovingly--and now I don't feel so good. You know, like Rotel-and-cheese dip and three kinds of chips and cocktail dogs in bacon and raw veggies for dipping (no one ate those). Whatever new-year new-life plan I had going, I realized in a greasy haze, has long since fallen by the wayside. Coming down with the death flu probably knocked that down initially (although I did lose about ten pounds, just by, uh, being unable to eat for seven days). But, you know, it's February. It's time to pick the slack back up.

(I think my parents were rooting for the Giants. Were the Giants playing? I heard a lot of screaming downstairs, that's all I know. I'm the kind of person who, if you asked me who was playing the Super Bowl today, would have said, "Oh, Tom Petty. I think.")

Petty too safe for halftime show. Ah, Tom Petty. I mean, I love him--I was as happy as anyone when he started off with "American Girl"--but I was questioning the wisdom of having him as the halftime act. You know, in this crazy-go-nuts world of musicians under the age of fifty. But you could totally hear the crowd singing along with all the songs, so I think they liked it. Which may really be the point of the thing--you've got a wide swath of America in that stadium, all ages and tastes, and maybe a half hour of greatest hits from a hall-of-famer is what's needed. I feel like Prince last year was The Most Awesome Thing That Ever Happened or Ever Will Happen to the Super Bowl, but--thinking about it now--I'm not sure that anyone else could have pulled off "Proud Mary," Bob Dylan and the Foo Fighters in a single set. Maybe vanilla sets of Greatest Hits are for the best at large sporting events, the majority of the time.

(My parents were not happy with Prince last year. Not in any moral sense, just that they don't like His Music, whatever that means. I figured Mom would be happier with Tom Petty this year. "Who?" she asks. After I'm done headdesking, I rattle off some song titles and she recollects who he is. "Oh," she says. "I don't like His Music." What music DO you like? WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LIKE???)

PUPPY BOWL IV! Who won? Everyone.

I find it hilarious that on Google Trends (http://www.google.com/trends) the phrase "how old is Tom Petty" is labeled volcanic in popularity.

[identity profile] sunihiroku.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Omg, icon love. I saw that movie last year so randomly.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHAHA. I just went to Wikipedia.

[identity profile] oldfeatheryhat.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
The phrase "puppy bowl": ranked #91. =]

[identity profile] mamapduck.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that a majority of the people who have the money or clout to get Superbowl tickets are closer to Tom Petty in age than they are to you or I. While Prince and Janet and their bizarre escapades are popular with younger floks, there's probably a good bit of catering to the paying customers in the stadium going on- which is not a bad thing.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, exactly. Although technically, Prince will be 50 this year himself.

[identity profile] edda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
I personally think Prince at any age exposing Janet's boob would be a better halftime show than any we've ever had.

Or Prince exposing Justin, period. 'Cause he's freaky like that.

PUPPY BOWL IV! Who won? Everyone.

Eeeeee! So true. SO TRUE.

[identity profile] padawansguide.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I heart Tom Petty! I enjoyed his show! I loved that the arrow through the giant heart on the field, that made up the stage, was a giant Gibson Flying V guitar. It was very cool. :-)

[identity profile] darth-snarky.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the chances of someone ever topping Prince last year are slim to none (as your awesome icon testifies).

Although the article's suggestion of Hannah Montana--really? Is there any audience overlap there at all? That would probaby turn into the worst sort of forced daddy-daughter bonding time.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah--and did you hear about the guy who wanted to crash the plane into the HM concert? Great, let's just combine that AND the Super Bowl for someone's next target.

[identity profile] darth-snarky.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I heard that story. I mean, I know ticket prices are insane but they're not *that* insane.

(She came to the restaurant where I work one time. Wasn't in my section, but was apparently very nice and way more polite than her mother. The worst behavior was from other customers. No, you may not harass her with your cameras. Miley Cyrus has left the building.)

BWA! We were singing, too, and waving imaginary lighters around. It was great but we were disappointed he didn't do 'Don't Come Around Here No More' top hat and all.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I can imagine. My favorite is "Learning to Fly," but I figured he'd go for "Free Fallin'," no question.

Pat? Pats? Patriots?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

[identity profile] eyemage.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
did you see the Size of that malumut ???

talk about giants in the puppy bowl!

[identity profile] ninepointfivemm.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Malamutes are pretty huge. My brother in law used to own one. *whistles*

He was as tall as me when he stood up and 50 pounds heavier. Good Lord.

But eeee, a Westie won the Puppy Bowl MVP!

[identity profile] glass-radical.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
somewhat unrelated, I just ordered my very first imps from BPAL. I'm excited.

I ordered Manhattan, Ouija, Persephone, White Rabbit, Bon Vivant and Jazz Funeral.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
You'll have to tell me how those turn out! I've always wanted to try White Rabbit and have just never gotten around to it.

[identity profile] delle.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Husband pointed out that the crowd around the stage were all college age kids. We hypothezie that they offered free admission to the concert at the local university!

I liked the music - but, yes, way too tame for the Super Bowl.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it was a pretty bland, polished collection of hits. I would much rather go to (or watch) an actual Tom Petty concert where he has room to be interesting, you know?

[identity profile] casirafics.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I also note that the first song they played came out the year I was born. I'm 29.

[identity profile] elisa0984.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
When the Super Bowel was in Jacksonville they let in a good chunk of the down town partying crowd for the concert (which composed a lot of college kids) and then hustled them out.

[identity profile] ich-faultier.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Superbowl for the first time in my life and it was a throughly enjoyable experience. It was nice to see the underdogs win AND make sure that 90% of the student body at my college would be glum for at least a week. Tom Petty was also pretty decent, better than the Strolling Bones I say.

[identity profile] thunderphoenix.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
As I've said before (let me be a dude and a geek for a moment), watching New York score that last touchdown was kinda like watching the Death Star blow up.

[identity profile] ich-faultier.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Booyah. It was pretty amazing. I was in the only room on a NE campus with five Giants fans. It was pretty much a historical moment.

I think this makes me a Giants fan.

[identity profile] mercat.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I love Tom Petty but he will never not be "too safe" for me. This involves my good high school friends, a distinct lack of clothing, and them changing the lyrics to make sure I understood what exactly was happening. I will state the song was "Free Falling" and leave the rest to people's imagination.

BUT IN OTHER NEWS, I love Tom Petty anyhow! I am an oldies girl. =)

[identity profile] mercat.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
ALSO OMG I DID NOT KNOW KITTENS WERE INVOLVED IN PUPPY BOWL EEEE SOOO CUUUUTE

[identity profile] kalliopeia.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Tom Petty is the embodiment of rock and roll cool. He was AWESOME.

[identity profile] mokeyhokey.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, how does your mom not like Tom Petty? That's like saying you don't like pie.

His set wasn't nearly as thrilling as Prince's, but as far as Aging Rockstars go, Tom pwns The Rolling Stones any day of the week.

I KNOW!!

As a Pats fan, the Puppy Bowl was the highlight of my day. I watched it with my puppy, who was largely indifferent except when he heard them squeaking the toys: he became convinced another dog was in the house squeaking his toys, and ran around collecting them all into a pile which he then guarded. He completely ignored the barking, but the squeaking called for action.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeeee. I totally want to see how my dogs would react now.

[identity profile] outinthestorm.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
That? is the cutest thing ever.

[identity profile] bunnymonkey.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Has Tina Turner ever done a halftime show? I think she'd be uh-mazing. Also Van Halen. What?

Super Bowl Ads on MySpace

Thanks to evil corporate synergy, MySpace is hosting a bunch of Super Bowl ads (http://www.myspace.com/superbowlads). I admit, the Adam Sandler ad made me laugh.

I've also fallen off the resolutions wagon a little. I think I need to hang out at The Cheering Section more, for inspiration.

just to fill you in on what happened Sunday other than Puppy Bowl...

I thoroughly enjoyed the Tom Petty half-time show, though I can understand people thinking it's too tame. I however am a HUGE Petty fan and was so, SO psyched that they opened with American Girl as it's one of my favorite songs. Ever.

Unrelated, last night I finally finished reading The Amber Spyglass. I had started it late last year sometime but got about 100 pages in and just lost my will for some reason. However, I found it two weeks ago at a used book sale for $.75 and snatched it up. See, now this is why I love and also (though not really) hate good books - I get SO attached to the characters! Seriously, I think I am somewhat heartbroken by this (series of) book(s). I was devastated last night and am still totally bummed today. Ugh.
