Well, right now, if someone decides to use this strike as their chance to write for TV, once the strike is over, they will pretty much not be able to work in Hollywood again. To write, you have to be a member of the Guild - and if you're a scab (someone who decides to write during a strike) you will be blackballed and not allowed into the Guild once it ends. Thus, you can't work again.
I'm completely behind the writers because it's absolute bull what the studios and producers are doing to them. Not every writer makes millions - the majority do not - and around 40 something percent of writers are unemployed at any given time. Residuals - what they're fighting for - are extremely important and deserved.
