Help! Firefox downloaded updates yesterday, and I said don't restart now, do whatever the next time I open Firefox. Then this morning, I couldn't get on the internet, and finally this afternoon I realized: that was the next time I'd opened Firefox. Internet Explorer totally works, and now it's the only way I can get on; Firefox claims to be unable to connect. AUGH SEND HELP I NEED BETTER TABBED BROWSING AND SPYWARE PROTECTION THAN THIS, IT'S SO SLOOOOOOOW.

ETA: It was Norton all along. I had to completely reinstall to get the "Configure internet access" thing to come up. Fuckin' Norton. (I love you guys. Just for this, I post pictures of puppies.)

If you can start FF, try going to Tools > Add-ons and press the "Find Updates" button?

Try opening Firefox in "safe mode". When you installed the browser, it should have put a link to this mode into its Start Menu folder.

Did you reboot between then and now?

Interesting... the last couple of updates (in the 2.0.x series anyway) have been better-behaved than normal for Firefox. (Love the browser, not totally sold on the auto-updating function.)

Go to Mozilla.com and grab a fresh, full installer?

Oops, I misunderstood your problem. If you haven't yet, try hitting Help > Check for Updates...

Oh, no! IE sucks. >_< Do you have virus protection enabled? I updated Firefox the other day and Norton Protection wouldn't let me online using it. I changed the settings in Norton to allow Firefox access to the internet, and I haven't had a problem since. Sorry I'm not much help.

Agreed. Save your bookmarks.htm file and do a full uninstall/reinstall if you must.

*sob*

I will go to the URL they gave me and try to redownload it--that's at least something to try.

Yeah, but only after it stopped working--I thought it was my internet (which does get persnickety if the weather's bad).

Yeah, I think I may try that.

Oh God, I wouldn't have thought to do that--how do I do that, exactly? The bookmarks, I mean.

I had some problems after updating. I finally ended up uninstalling and reinstalling several times. I also had to blow away my old profile and create a new one.

Mozilla says: Some firewall software may silently block Firefox from running. This often happens immediately after Firefox has been installed or updated from a previous version. There are configuration instructions available for most popular firewall programs to help you ensure that Firefox is allowed to connect to the Internet.

Some firewalls require you to reboot your system for changes to take effect.

There are instructions for various firewalls -- what are you running?

Someone suggested Norton, and that's exactly what it turned out to be--I had to reinstall Firefox to get the "configure" dialogue to come up.

The cool thing about Firefox is that you can uninstall/reinstall it and it will retain your add-ons and even sometimes your bookmarks, but I'd back those up anyway, just to be safe.

Oh man, I hate Norton - it used to reject all the cookies I was using, e.g., to access school databases, on an hourly basis. Let's uninstall it, I said, but my father was very emphatically attached. (Then again, he apparently hadn't realized Firefox had tabs until... yesterday.) I have never been so glad to see a trial version run out.

I gave up on Norton's a couple of years ago when, after I PAID for the puppy, the problems it caused made me exceed the maximum number of updates to the base software I was allowed.

WTF? I PAID for a software program that causes all kinds of computer nightmares and then limits the number of times I can fix it? Forget that!

Went to AVG, have never looked back. (Although I occasionally use the Norton disk to run a few checks on my machine. Works well enough since I'm still on 98 SE. But I do NOT install the sucker.)

Norton is the evil spawn of Satan. Yeah, it protects you from viruses...by not letting you DO anything. Ugh. We spent nearly a year fighting with our home network before I realised it was just my husband's stupid Norton. I am a long time AVG lover. Not sucky and free - what's not to love?

Norton sucks; it doesn't stop much of anything and sows your computer way down. My husband works for a computer store and he recommends AVG as the best free stuff you can find (obviously something you pay for will usually work better than freeware - except for Norton that is). The best antivirus software you can buy is NOD32. It doesn't let anything bad get by.

It's really wrong of me to secretly enjoy said crisis because it leads to your using that mesmerizing icon, isn't it? (Plz note would never feel that way if it were severe, life-threatening issue.)
