”It is our honor to introduce a close friend of Ricky Bobby,” and it’s totally Will Ferrell in a fro, holding a white rose and woefully warbling a song about how comedy always gets the shaft at awards (which, by the way, it does). Oh God, it’s Jack Black. God, someone tranquilize him. Now he’s threatening to fight various nominees, including Leo and Peter O’Toole and, on Will Ferrell’s part, Ryan Gosling and Mark Wahlberg--“Actually, I’m not going to mess with you. You’re actually kind of badass.” And then Jack Black hits on Helen Mirren: “You’re just hot. What party are you going to?” And then John C. Reilly stands up and begs for this to stop and I’m kind of with him on this one.

Best Makeup! I have Pan down for this one as well, and just from the clips, it’s... kind of no contest. John C. Reilly paws helplessly at the envelope as Ferrell struggles with it. And Pan wins, whee! Montse Ribé thanks “the Aca-demmy” and, I think, Picasso. God bless. And then they play the two of them off the stage.

Ellen DeGeneres is backstage “gossiping” about Judi Dench (“She’s not here, she’s having ‘knee surgery’... on her eyes...”) and “quickly” turns around to introduce Jaden Smith and Abigail Breslin. After some pained banter, in which Jaden screws up and reads the prompt for the next award (and Will Smith is shown roffling in the audience), Best Animated Short: Little Matchgirl? Little Matchgirl? Aww, “The Danish Poet,” my first biff. Jaden: “So now we’re here to present...” Best Live Action Short: I don’t know, but “West Bank Story” looks hilarious. Yay! It wins! I very nearly chose it for my prediction, too. Winner Ari Sandel is breathless, possibly because he is gathering up oxygen for a mile-a-minute speech. Also, I think I just finally realized that the big bald guy they keep cutting to is Jack Nicholson. And I think I was right about it being Gwyneth Paltrow in the peach dress.

Here’s Clint Eastwood talking over clips of Letters from Iwo Jima. If this is going to take the place of the stodgy “And now we present a clip from Best Picture nominee...” feature, I heartily approve.

Helen Mirren did a little one-two punch after Jack Black called out to her. Best part of that whole thing.

Aww Jaden and Abigail look cute.

And I want to see West Bank Story now.

I know. It was not a very pleasant realization.

I actually had a lot of love for the random ass dance. simply because I am way to much of a corny theatre person.

as cheesy as it was, I love Abigail Brenson and Jaden Smith.

And the Jack Black and Will Ferrel thing doesn't work any more because they both did more serious work this year.

Well, it was, uhm, interesting. I'm just wondering why they have time for that and then only give people 30 seconds to thank their mothers.

no, not yay that West Bank Story one, it was the worst of the bunch (I thought). It got the most applause when I saw it, but I thought it failed to be quite as funny as it wanted to be. I thought Helmer and Son was much funnier and , and Binta and the Great Idea was very sweet as well, plus really sweet children. However, The Danish Poet is wonderful, and if it comes out on DVD, you should see it, because it was just great. The Little Match Girl is nice to look at, but come on, it's one of the most depressing stories in history. Maestro was also wonderful. The studio pictures were pretty to look at, but they didn't have the story that The Danish Poet and Maestro had. They felt more about showing off the technology.

What's the deal with Jack Nicholson? Is he in rehab with Britney Spears?

I did, however, laugh uproariously at the Ferrel/Black/Reilly number.

True, true. It was nice as an intro to the sound awards, but I can see where it's not really necessary.

I loved the look on La Mirren's face during the Ferrell/Black/Reilly number. She was all "Hells, yeah, I'm 61 and cute boys still want in my pants." I kind of hope I'm that bangable when I'm that age. Geez, I don't think I'm that bangable now...

I LOVED this Will/Jack/John thing. too cute. I wish comedy could be more represented! And neither of Jack or Will's less toliet humor type movies (The Holiday and Stranger Than Fiction, respectively) were enough to get to the Oscars. Although, I would call The Holiday a RoCom, I didn't really think of Stranger Than Fiction as a comedy...I guess they have to try a little harder!

I also didn't want Westbank to win. I didn't see it, but I thought the clip they showed looked dumb.

And HEE on the "badass" comment. Oh Marky Mark. <3

WORD. I couldn't understand how West Bank Story even got nommed. It was funny for about two minutes and then I was "oh God, when will it end?" It was more suited to an SNL sketch. Any of the others would have been a much better choice, although I didn't like Saviour as well as the other three. The most disappointing category of the night for me.

Agreed on the animated shorts as well. Match Girl struck me as same ol' same ol', while The Danish Poet and Maestro were delightful. I was kinda pulling for Maestro but was disappointed with the winner. Liv Ullman's narration was terrific.

Montse Ribe and "Picasso"

"Picasso" is the name of one of the entities involved in making Pan's Labyrinth - a production company, I think, though I guess it could have been a studio as well... I don't know that much about the Spanish film scene, and one would have to assume that it's Spanish rather than Mexican, given the name. So, yeah, that's what was up with that, or at least as much as I can tell you about it. Probably more info on IMDB or something.
