Firstly, happy birthday to the Lovely Emily!

Secondly: I just fell up the stairs with a bowl of cereal in one hand and a glass of tea in the other. The good news is that I took it hard in the shin to avoid spilling anything. The bad news is, my shin hurts like a motherfuck now.

notjo on JF has a Star Wars icon with Ewan McGregor asking, "Isn't anyone else going to act?" Someone requested an Eragon version. Good Cleo always helps.

(Note: You have to have an actual JournalFen account to log in over there. The code was taken from LJ [open source], but the two systems are unconnected. Anything you want to say about the icons would probably be more easily said over here.)

[livejournal.com profile] kosher_jenny explains the Libya headline from the other day:
That Libya case is just depressing. I imagine a lot of people aren't going to go beyond the initial shock of "deliberately infecting hundreds of children with HIV" but with further reading shows that what Libya has created here is basically a hostage situation: "Dear Bulgaria, give us $2.7bn* or we'll kill these doctors. Love, us". These doctors have been turned into scapegoats for the real problem, the poor hygiene in Libyan hospitals that most likely caused the infections in the first place, and several international experts on the virus have stated so. Luc Montagnier (co-discovered HIV) being one of them. Of course if these doctors do get executed not only will it do nothing to solve the problem, but make matters even worse as fewer foreign medical workers will want to visit, and people will continue to get infected and die.

Nature has a section collecting their news articles and editorials related to the case, including a study released this December showing that the HIV strains that infected the children were already present in the hospital prior to the foreign medical staff's arrival. It's all full access right now, so you don't need to pay to read them. The BBC also have a Q&A section that summarizes the situation and has links to their previous coverage at the bottom.

*Which, by the way, is the same amount of money that Libya paid in compensation to the families of the victims of the PAM 103 bombing. Odd, that.

Most Americans have had premarital sex: "More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past. 'The data clearly show that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government's funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12- to 29-year-olds,' Finer said."

Speaking of headlines...

Have a look at this bit of BBC headline-speak (http://syndicated.livejournal.com/bbcnewsworld/12091613.html) if you want a good laugh!

[identity profile] sound-of-bells.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Eeee, I am squeeing so hard right now over the cute things falling asleep. I need kittens... and I need them to stay in kitten-state perpetually.

[identity profile] thebroodwich.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Kate's house burns down AND asian cleavage? My night officially rocks now.

And Evangeline Lilly kind of looks like Gollum in that photo.

[identity profile] quizzicalsphinx.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why does Nancy Drew look like Velma decided to play dress-up with Daphne's kid sister?

[identity profile] purpleivey.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! Wierd! And wasn't Nancy supposed to be college aged? She always struck me as being about 18 or 19 - this girl doesn't even look old enough to drive!

And don't get me started on the non-redheaded-ness. Someone already ranted about that so I'm gonna try and resist...

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone remember what happens in Terabithia?

Does the girl die? Or am I just making that up?

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
okay, thank you.

It's been about five years since I've read that book. Does she fall out of the tree?

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think the rope swing breaks, and she drowns in a rain-flooded creek.

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
ohhh, yes, it's allll coming back to me now. And then he throws the art supplies she gave him in or something.

That was an odd book.

[identity profile] aki.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
ANDRE!

That is, I love your icon.

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
thank you.

[identity profile] derangeddarling.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
speaking of icon love, <3s for yours. ;)

[identity profile] aki.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It was originally part of an icon set from Pixel Girl Presents (http://www.pixelgirlpresents.com/).

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda liked it. We read it in fourth grade, with a student teacher. Well, we got halfway through it before (apparently) the student teacher finally read the end, and decided it wouldn't be appropriate for kids our age (or something.) I had already finished it, and was amused when we suddenly switched to a different book.

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, we read it in 5th grade. And then I learned recently that it is on the 100 Most Banned Books list. Which I thought was weird, but I guess parents don't want to have their kids reading about death.

[identity profile] evilsimon.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
...J.K. Rowling doesn't routinely have spaztastic dreams about her characters? I mean. How?

[identity profile] purpleivey.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously! When I'm in a play, I get worried if I haven't started dreaming about it by the time we open. I mean here she's been writing Harry for... what, like a decade? More than that, I think... and she's only just now starting to dream about him? Wierdness. heck, I'VE had dreams about Harry Potter characters.

[identity profile] kjmatthews.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think karma is confusing Evangeline Lilly with the character she plays on tv…

Dunno if you've seen this (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/296584_cannon20.html?source=mypi), but it + the Libya thing just made me sad for humanity.

Traditions are all well and good, yeah, but seriously. The fact people are like, "So what if that kid almost had to have his leg amputated, it's a traditionnnnn!" is really freaking depressing.

[identity profile] lyricalnights.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
But shouldn't Nancy Drew be a redhead? Or at the very least, a strawberry-blonde? Dammit, does no one understand titian-haired these days???

Oh, nevermind, it's just an excuse to shove Roberts 2.0 at our faces. *sigh*

People seem to have the most ridiculous reflexes. I know that if I'm carrying something and I trip, and it's a question of hurting myself or spilling something, I always hurt myself. You'd think evolution would have eliminated that behavior by now, but maybe I'm the test case. Anyhow, heal fast, okay?

[identity profile] angelan.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too - I mean, bruises heal, but that delicious cake you just baked isn't going to spring fully formed from the oven if you just wait long enough. Plus you never need to wipe a bruise out of the carpet, but anything you drop can stain.

[identity profile] pscopathictiger.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've developed a new one. When I trip and start to fall, I spin myself around so I don't fall on my face.

It's actually quite nice.

From what I've seen in the trailer, the screenwriter(s) for Bridge to Terabithia should be boiled in oil. What is this CGI shit?

[identity profile] kosher-jenny.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
I know! What the hell? Way to, I dunno, miss the point guys?

*harrumphs*

[identity profile] lederhosen.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
From what I saw, they're using it in the same sort of way as Heavenly Creatures, to show the kids' fantasy world. Worked there, but I'm not convinced they're going to keep the ending...

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a still of the boy crying that makes me think they will keep the ending.

[identity profile] derangeddarling.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I said this where you posted the icon, too, but one of those acting icons of POTC with Jack being the actor would be amazing. *puppy eyes*

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it would make sense, though--there is, in fact, a good bit of acting in those movies.

[identity profile] edda.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of interesting that J.K. Rowling hasn't dreamed of Harry potter until now, because I'm the same way about dreams--if I see you every day, and think about you a lot in my waking hours, you never make an appearance in my dreams. But if you're very, very peripheral to my daylight hours/thoughts, you're much more likely to pop up in some weird nighttime vignette.

The linkspam is very toothsome of late. And I don't say that just because I'm in it. *whistles nonchalantly* I honestly wasn't thinking of it at the time. I am flattered. *squee*

[identity profile] r-a-black.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome icon. Thinking of that movie still makes my brain cry.

[identity profile] troubleinchina.livejournal.com 2006-12-21 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't wanna go to work so I'm just gonna randomly tell you a story about China & breasts.

Without going into too much detail, I'm a pretty large-breasted girl. (And in China, I'd go running, and man, I was hawt. *laugh*) One day I took a trip out to Shanghai, and was just walking through the People's Park there when I noticed these two men walking near me, staring. This wasn't precisely unusual, as I was living in a small town at the time, but a bit out of character for Shanhai. It didn't occur to me they were staring in awe at my tank-top-covered breasts until one of them walked into a tree.

I was very nice - I didn't laugh until he'd run off, bright red.

...

Please don't make me go work....

that Jadis icon is awesome : D Any way I could snag it?

also, I'd love to see the Ewan icon, but as I don't have a JF account, I can't get to it - any chance you could post it, or the eragon one here?

Thanks!

I worked at a restaurant for a good... 6 years or so and the only time I fell on the stairs (that's right, stairs, at a restaurant... talk about awesome) was the day that I fell up the stairs holding three salads with large sides of dressing. The salads didn't spill, but I ended up with three different oily creamy salad dressings down the front of my shirt. It was special.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2006-12-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I would like to write lots of parodies, time and energy (or lack thereof) prevents me from putting more than one or two online in the course of a year. I put up only POTO in 2005, and this year I've done V for Vendetta and The Prestige. I'm not saying I won't do more, but I can't do everything I'd like to, either.
