My dog Lucky just died right in front of me. He was sleeping, breathing, and then I heard a rattling noise and then he wasn't breathing. The vet says it must have been a blood clot or a stroke and he just went in his sleep. My stepfather took him to the vet but they couldn't do anything for him, it was too late. The vet thinks it must have been instantaneous. He died right in front of me and I didn't even realize it at the time. My stepfather came back--Mom met him at the vet's and stayed with Lucky--and took me and Sister Girl to go see him one last time. My sister's gone to pieces. We just stood there and petted him. When I got to have my turn alone with him, I petted him in all the places he liked best, like his nose and behind the cup of his ear and right above his tail. He was nine years old and I thought we had so much more time.

So sorry, Lauren. I just heard last night from Val. I'm really glad it was quick and peaceful, but I know you must be devastated. If there's anything I can do please let me know.

Thanks--I really do want to go to the movie tomorrow night (I think Em said she'd mentioned it to you?), get out of the house if nothing else, but it finally occurred to me that I might not be well enough. I think I woke up Sunday or Monday with this cold. I was definitely running a fever for a while. I feel "feverish" today, but I don't know if it's an actual 100+ degree fever. Do you think I'm contagious at this point? Because I don't want to give Heather the head cold from hell as a birthday present. As far as *feeling* bad, I'm not coughing at all or sniffling much, and I can feel bad in a theater seat as easily as I can feel bad in a computer chair, the way I figure it.

Not real sure on the contagiousness of a cold, if that's what you've got, but everything I've read says your most contagious from 2-5 days after onset of symptoms, but can be contagious for longer. So, I would say if you don't have a fever and you're feeling better, you'll probably be okay as long as you don't sneeze directly on people and you wash your hands often. That's my "Brett, the physician for the day" segment. I'll be here all week. Seriously, you're better off asking a people doc, but that's my best guess.

And I agree, you need to get out and do something if you can. Get your mind off things for a while. I hope you're feeling better by tomorrow!

Heh. I know, we abuse the privilege of knowing a doctor so much. I do have some vanilla hand sanitizer I could bring with me, though. I'll dig up a thermometer tonight and try to get an official reading.

My deepest condolences.

It's been 3 years since my little Elvis went, and I still miss him.
It's never easy losing a loved one.

I know I'm many days late (I blame school completely), but I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It's always hard to lose an animal, especially the longer you have them. 9 years is nothing to shake a stick at, he's family by then.

I lost my 17 year old cat in March, and I know how you're feeling. My cat was a lot older than your dog, and more expected, but he had been in great health, and it was a very rapid deterioration. So frightening to see how rapidly a living, breathing being can just go downhill. Even scarier how quickly Lucky went. (Blood clots and aneurysms scare the crap out of me.)

The vet who put my cat down told me that whenever I feel sad about him being gone, that I should just close my eyes and envision a large field with lots of grass and trees, and picture myself there playing with Scamper. She said it helped her when her cat died, and it's been working for me, too. You could always visit Lucky there. :)

*Hugs*
