My dog Lucky just died right in front of me. He was sleeping, breathing, and then I heard a rattling noise and then he wasn't breathing. The vet says it must have been a blood clot or a stroke and he just went in his sleep. My stepfather took him to the vet but they couldn't do anything for him, it was too late. The vet thinks it must have been instantaneous. He died right in front of me and I didn't even realize it at the time. My stepfather came back--Mom met him at the vet's and stayed with Lucky--and took me and Sister Girl to go see him one last time. My sister's gone to pieces. We just stood there and petted him. When I got to have my turn alone with him, I petted him in all the places he liked best, like his nose and behind the cup of his ear and right above his tail. He was nine years old and I thought we had so much more time.

Date: 2006-09-21 10:56 pm (UTC)My deepest condolences.
It's been 3 years since my little Elvis went, and I still miss him.
It's never easy losing a loved one.

Date: 2006-09-27 10:48 pm (UTC)I lost my 17 year old cat in March, and I know how you're feeling. My cat was a lot older than your dog, and more expected, but he had been in great health, and it was a very rapid deterioration. So frightening to see how rapidly a living, breathing being can just go downhill. Even scarier how quickly Lucky went. (Blood clots and aneurysms scare the crap out of me.)
The vet who put my cat down told me that whenever I feel sad about him being gone, that I should just close my eyes and envision a large field with lots of grass and trees, and picture myself there playing with Scamper. She said it helped her when her cat died, and it's been working for me, too. You could always visit Lucky there. :)
*Hugs*
