Well, I mean, clearly we had Star Wars before that, which was itself homage to the serials of the--I don't know, '30s and '40s? Back to the Future may have brought it back, though. I mean, Star Wars is one thing; it was pretty much like no other movie at the time, and just because George Lucas does it ("I know! I'll have all the actors be stiff and hokey, JUST LIKE THE '30S!") doesn't mean everyone else will want to.
