The best Kingdom of Loathing quest EVER:

Ah, good, just the Adventurer we wanted to see. We expect that, by now, you've noticed all the temporal rifts popping up around the Kingdom. Well, in our historical archive, we found an old medical journal dating back to the Cola Wars. Apparently, many soldiers on both sides of the war were infected by a mysterious plague, contracted from some of the many unexpected reinforcements that joined the two armies during the battle for the Nearby Plains. The symptoms described sound eerily similar to the plague that's been infecting our population in the present time.

The bad news is: the journal says that, left uncured, the Gray Plague turns those infected with it into mindless, slavering zombies. The good news is: the military doctors were able to formulate a vaccine for the Gray Plague. The other bad news is: the primary ingredient for the cure is a certain gland found in the heads of the aforementioned zombies.

However, we've been able to come up with a solution. Don't ask how, but we've managed to create a rift that leads to a temporal location of our choosing, to wit: the Seaside Town, 28 days from now, after the entire population of the Kingdom has transformed into zombies. We need you to travel there and collect the ingredients for the cure, and then bring them back to the current time so that we can figure out how to immunize the citizens of Loathing against the infection.

Oh, and don't try to leave the town while you're in the future, as the rest of the Kingdom is highly radioactive. Apparently, one of us decided -- um, decides? Will be going to decide? -- that nuking the Kingdom from orbit would be the only way to be sure. It probably will have sounded like a good idea at the time.

I just read a bad review of your book in Total Film magazine- even though I haven't read the book yet, they were claiming they were funnier, and they're...not. To put it mildly.

Bah.

It did remind me to get the book next time I'm in a bookstore, though...

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, a bad review in Total Film? That sucks. I mean, just in sheer terms of exposure, that sucks. Ah well. Maybe with any luck people will see it in stores and pick it up anyway, out of curiosity, and go, "Hey! They were totally wrong!"

[identity profile] sarah531.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah- I was so tempted to send them a bordering-on-snarky email pointing out that no-one wears t-shirts/badges/avatars with quotes from their parodies on them. :p

I'm still buying it- I will also attempt to buy copies for Christmas presents. ;)

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they actually write parodies themselves? I don't know that I've actually read a TF, other than article scans at fansites (LOTR or HP, for example)--being over here in the U.S., after all.

[identity profile] sarah531.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah- this issue they did Lord Of War. They're very short, and it doesn't say who wrote them...well, not this one anyway.

I'm not sure if Total Film is that well heard of outside the UK. Most people are more likely to have heard of Empire (their rivals) instead, I reckon. :)

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that makes me feel a little better. I know I feel some irrational professional jealousy when it comes to parodies sometimes--kind of like, "That's not what I would have said! THEREFORE IT IS NOT FUNNY!" And "we're funnier" makes more sense in that context. I mean, if, uh... let's say, the Wall Street Journal was like, "Shit, *we're* funnier," I'd go cry or something. ; )

[identity profile] sarah531.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
They only think they're funnier, anyway. ;)

Mind if I friend you, BTW? :D

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Go for it. I literally don't have room to friend people back, but I try to check up on people's journals now and then. : )

[identity profile] amberdulen.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know what they say--there's no such thing as bad publicity.

[identity profile] sarah531.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and as for Empire (just read your recent post) the review of your book in TF was accompanied by a review of a book (although not a funny one) that got two stars from them, but three stars in this issue of Empire- and I gather that they only deducted a star because they didn't like the layout of that book. So things on the Empire front look pretty hopeful. :D

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow... they're kind of picky, aren't they?

(Anonymous) 2005-11-06 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
While I don't think you have to worry about getting dissed by the Wall Street Journal, I do have to say, they occasionally manage to be pretty damn funny.

Just...unintentionally. :o)

seriously! i've been extremely irritated with their cleo-wannabe "rough cuts" for quite a while. is it the nov issue?

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's the Nov or Dec. Someone figured out that it's The Editing Room guy, and he's been around at least as long as I have, if not longer.

December issue- they're always one month early. :)
