I remember hearing that JK said she cried when she wrote the part about him dying.
Honestly, the way he was treating Harry (being all pissy that Harry wasn't a clone of his dad), by the time he died I didn't like him that much anyway. So, for me it was basically "Oh, is that who dies? Why did she get so worked up about it?"
