Quick note for FT refugees while I'm working: if you want to go save your favorite threads, hit "print this topic" (it's in the line of tiny cream-colored print, right after "track this topic" and "email this topic"). You'll get a nicely-formatted text-only version of the entire thread on one web page that you can save. I think the forums are going down on March 15, so you might want to hop to archiving anything you want to save.
Edited to clarify: yes, the FT forums are going to the Big Message Boards in the sky on March 15. Fametracker.com itself will remain, however. And yeah, Wing and Glark have said several times on these threads that there's pretty much nothing that can be done--subscription memberships would be "nightmarish to adminstrate" and also, that's what the Outrageously Overpriced Donation Things (OODTs) were supposed to serve as, and hardly anyone bought them.

The reason I would advocate LJ comms over message boards--which are also good in different ways--is that you can restrict LJ comm membership to invitees only and make the entries members-only. If you're going to trade music within a dedicated group, you might seriously consider LJ. I don't know how you're doing the mixtapes, but using a comm might make it even easier to trade music, because I can't imagine Wing's been letting y'all link to downloads.
