Oh, I turned on Raoul the moment he said "And here I was going to give my name to an opera wench!" TO HER FACE, but then the Phantom gets a little childish and demanding himself, and... that's one of the things I really liked about the book, that it wasn't so much about Sparkly Hero and Brooding Antihero archetypes as it was about flawed, nuanced individuals.
