Tired. Sort of depressed today, although I think it's just a hormone dip. (So I am getting my warm fuzzies here.) Really tired of the spew of backlogged LJ comment notifications, not to mention Yahoo mail misbehaving--I can't do anything without having to refresh or log in again. Didn't get very far on the book--typed up some LOTR notes, stared at the monitor a lot, wallowed in general block for a while.

So it's August--that time of the year when my mother starts freaking out over Christmas shopping, which sounds less crazy when you realize that both my birthday and my sister's are in December. (Mine's the 14th, hers is the 17th--born seven years apart.) I've put several of y'all's book recommendations on my wish list, but I'm still on the lookout for a few things. Oh, and I'm ticked that Michel Faber's all like, "I could list all the books I used to research the incredibly detailed Victorian setting of Crimson Petal, but that would just bore you." NO, IT WOULDN'T. TELL ME WHAT YOU USED, HOR! The one book he mentions is The Victorian Kitchen, which is now out of print, so I'm on the lookout for a copy, used or otherwise, that doesn't cost $43.

I really like The Crimson Petal and the White so far--I've just begun the third section, and Agnes is all like, "Wow, I'm so crazy, but I'm so popular now!" Except that people are telling me that they liked the book just fine--until the end. Uh-oh.

The last I heard about a movie adaptation, Kirsten Dunst either was signed or in considerations for Sugar. This is going to sound really weird, but... I've started imagining Bryce Dallas Howard from The Village as Sugar. She seems... weird enough, if that makes any sense. I'm not sure Kirsten Dunst is my first thought for a strangely beautiful, bony, flat-chested, redheaded (okay, Mary Jane notwithstanding) prostitute with psoriasis and revenge fantasies.

A lot of it's pre-Victorian, but this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671882368/103-5850527-0591061?v=glance) is a really good book for getting a grasp on how 19th-century England worked. I wish I'd read it before studying Jane Austen at school.

Sadly, I just 'discovered' the Victorian era, so I've no book reccs, sorry :(

For me, August is the month where I start drowning in paper and pens, as it's school month. *looks up at calender* Holy crap! the torture starts on Thursday! Nooo!

(On a happy note, cool meme :D)

Love your undies--cute, sassy, and feminine, just like you. (Mine are flimsy, cheap, and trashy, just like...uh, just like a pair of flimsy, cheap, trashy underpants.)

I'm having massive baby warthog love! *squee*

You've probably already seen this on your travels, but if you're looking for a Victorian Kitchen resource, there's always Mrs Beeton (http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/aut/beeton_i.html). There's also a nice article here (http://books.guardian.co.uk/thekitchen/story/0,12969,929704,00.html) about its continuing influence.

The mother and father of all source books on Victorian London is London Labour and the London Poor (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140432418/qid=1091613829/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8442482-7195231?v=glance&s=books), a huge collection of interviews with the working and non-working poor by a journalist. It's heavy going, but fascinating, with the direct voices of stallholders, beggars, crossing sweepers, thieves, and all the street people of Victorian London.

The classic illustrated book is Blanchard Jerrold's London, A Pilgrimage (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/048622306X/qid=1091614093/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-8442482-7195231?v=glance&s=books), with magnificent illustrations by Gustave Dore.

I imagine any film version of Crimson Petal will cast someone much more ordinary-looking than Sugar, but Bryce Dallas Howard looks a good possibility (haven't seen The Village yet, so I can't judge her acting).

BTW, I really loved the baby animals. Very warm and fuzzy!

Understanding the hormone dip first hand - thanks for posting where you're finding warm fuzzies (although I think that I'll have to restrain going "awwwwww" today at work)

Also, I don't know which author of The Victorian Kitchen you're looking for, as there was more than one, but I found a found a few in print listed on amazon.co.uk and they usually come pretty quickly and are reasonable on shipping(just received the adult cover verson of HP book 5 the other day from them)

Those are cute undies. If I saw you in them as this says, I would assume you had just gotten up , and would offer you coffee and breakfast.

Amusingly, Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Kirsten Dunst for that role in Village. Did a much better job than KD would have, I think.

THAT is a briliant idea. I would go back and read the entire book again while imagining Bryce in Sugar's shoes. So good.

Haven't seen Bryce Dallas Howard, though Kirsten Dunst could make a good Sugar, in my opinion. Maybe they could figure out a way to make her appear flatter?

Has there been any more news about making a movie?

Bad link! Bad, bad! *ahem*

Ms. Cleo, if you are indeed looking for the Jennifer Davies book, I suggest running your search through BookFinder.com (http://www.bookfinder.com/), there's a hardcover from the UK listed for $9.40, and Stateside for $16.86.
