Also, if your mom can tolerate it, she can try doing some stretching and strengthening for her legs. It will help a lot in the recovery if her muscles are used to working hard. If she can't tolerate being weight-bearing, then some basic stretches are good too. Anything will help.
And during recovery, we learned it is better to be drugged up and out of pain (thus able to tolerate more physical therapy) than to be in pain and not able to sleep/rest/etc.
