My mom has a similar sitch with her knee. She has almost the exact thing going on with her knee as your mom does with hers, only she's holding off on the knee replacement for now. So her doctor's been giving her steroid injections for the time being. She's almost 60 now and he feels she's too young for a full on replacement yet. We'll see how long she can hold out...
