Oooh, here's how I think about it: transporting any original art into another format (book into TV, movie into book, etc.) is FANFIC. It's another person's version of the story, right? So it's fanfic. If I just take in the new version as fanfic I can appreciate it for what it is, good or bad, instead of judging its similarity to the original.
