Wednesday night, pathetically anxious about American Idol

A couple of things I wanted to talk about--first of all, crime. Local crime. Times is hard, and it's getting a little scary out there. My parents were at Publix doing the weekly grocery shopping last weekend, and there was, like, a gang rumble in the parking lot while they were getting into the car. Like, groups of people chasing each other around and smashing bottles and calling for getaway cars ("Come and get me, man! You gotta come pick me up, man!" An effective gangbanger should always provide his own ride, I always say). All while my stepfather's standing at the cart return with his hands on his hips going, "Huh." ("George, GET IN THE CAR!")

In a scarier incident, my aunt was in the parking lot of the Wildwood Wal-Mart when a stranger approached her and demanded a dollar. She said no--I don't know how to explain it in print, exactly, but you know how there's asking people money and then there's threatening ways of asking people for money? This was one of those Prelude to a Purse-Snatching ways. Something you need to know about my aunt, by the way: she's an inner-city kindergarten teacher, and she doesn't put up with shit. "I think you can give me a dollar," he says, edging closer. "I think you need to get a job," she fires off. He edges closer: "I think you're going to give me a dollar." My mother's telling me this story and I'm kind of freaking out at this point, but fortunately, one of the Wal-Mart employees came up to my aunt and said, "Ma'am, is this man bothering you?" And then the employee recognized the man, because he had just tried to snatch someone else's purse a few minutes earlier and they were still looking for him. This is all in the middle of the day, by the way.

"It's the economy," my mother said. "People are having to choose between food and gas, they just can't pay for both. They're getting desperate."

Well, then there's the other thing that happened to my cousin--same aunt: her daughter. My cousin was walking home and parted ways with a friend a street or so away from their house, when she noticed this white SUV was following her. Like, really closely. Really slowly. All the way up her street. My cousin has a very small build, so she often looks younger than she actually is (she's graduating high school this month, but she could probably pass for early teens if you weren't looking closely); maybe the creep in the car thought she was a much younger girl, I don't know. Maybe he didn't care. So this SUV follows her up the street, and she's freaking out this point, so she runs up her driveway, and the car follows her what the hell. Like, up this long steep hill to her back door. Fortunately my cousin was able to get in safely, and the car fled, but what the hell? The world is a scary place, and you can't always blame it on the economy.

Yeah, things like this would happen to me at least a couple of times when I was a preteen/teen, but I would never report it or tell my parents about it, because I didn't want to freak them out.

[identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
They say the thing to do is not to go home, since that leads the follower to where the person they're following lives, but that's not always feasible....

[identity profile] greenwitch.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly what I said (below). The one time I got followed, I started making plans as to who's house I would run to (a friend of mine lived about a block away -- although, I suppose if you're going to run to a stranger's house, someone might not be home and that could end worse). But luckily the guy stopped following me.

I didn't walk to the stores after that, though.

[identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see we posted at the same time. Yeah, that's lucky that he stopped following you.

[identity profile] greenwitch.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, looking back on it, the guy was probably somewhat harmless (again, I was big for my age, and the guy was probably like 17 or something and trying to hit on me -- he kept asking my name and such, I gave him a fake one at some point and kept saying "leave me alone" and I guess he eventually did). But it was scary at the time.

[identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I laughed for about five minutes at that last one, by the way.

You and me both. *giggles*

I know I can't wait for whores in my stocking.

Don't you mean in ONLY stockings? 'Cause Lord knows they can't shoot intruders topless while wearing anything else.

Also, I get creeped out on a regular basis because the only hangout for young people in this town is a goddamn pool hall not far down and across the street from my apartment. Every weekend there's shouts, screams, fights and whatnot on the sidewalk outside, and these creepy sleezy fuckwits are always mulling around outside so that if I come home after dark they all go silent and watch. Ugh, sometimes I hate this town.

Uuughh that always scares me so badly.

God, that just reminds me of that quote from The Gift of Fear that men are afraid men will laugh at them, and women are afraid that men will kill them.

[identity profile] greenwitch.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
All of those incidents are terrifying, goddamn. I hope that the cops were notified re: your cousin? I had some guy follow me on foot once (I was 12 at the time, but always looked older... maybe 15... he could've been an older teen or something, so maybe he was just trying to hit on me, but I was pretty damn scared), and I just ran up to a mother and her kid walking on the other side of the street and stayed close to them. Might not have been the best idea to run to her own house since now the guy knows where she lives, so... cops. Yeah.

I get that crime increases when the economy tanks, but dude. My parents were dirt poor when I was growing up, and I don't believe that they snatched purses or anything like that.

you know, a friend and I were also victims of a creepy person in a car, except they had a camera poking out of the window at us... we went to the police station and gave descriptions and what not, but they weren't ever caught. Considering the fact that this was, at least, 8 years ago... I agree with you in thinking it's not just the economy. what the hell people >.<

I agree totally - I liked him fine at frst, but at some point it looks like it just got to be too much - and how much must it suck to be that guy, on AI, and just have to pray for a mercy killing. Well, sort of a mercy suicide...:)

Oh sweet jesus another human who's seen Hornblower. I think I might be a little bit in love with you. When I met Jamie Bamber a while back and had him sign my Hornblower box set dvd (well the one dvd cover with his face on it anyway) he was blown away anyone had even heard of it so yey for others who have!

Also fabulous icon - I might have to snag it.

I love Hornblower. It was my first online fandom and I've been deeply in love with Archie since the first series. Needless to say I've been thrilled with Jamie Bamber's success as he's a real stand up guy. Have you been the the Horatians Forum? Those ladies are terribly nice and very Hornblower devoted.

My cop father tried to teach me some common sense stuff about losing someone following you in a car like that. I don't remember much (I was, like, 7 or so, and the lesson completely freaked me out despite that I lived in Small Town, America.) The one I remember was, "Don't be afraid to trespass and cut through people's yards and climb their fences." One occurred to me just now--don't know if he said this or not--but if you pass an intersection, you could, as soon as the car had crossed it, double back and RUN LIKE HELL while digging out your cell phone and calling 911. Sure the car could do a u-turn or hit the gas in reverse, but it gives you a precious second or two and even perhaps a chance to duck under cover.

Know your territory, too, I always say. Know the shortcuts, pay attention to everything around you, and carry real mace, not pepper spray. (You can get it at Army or Navy surplus stores.)

[identity profile] greenwitch.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 03:14 am (UTC)(link)

That's a great idea -- plus, if there were other cars around it'd look suspicious.

Also, thank god for cellphones nowadays. Actually, an old roommate of mine had one come in handy during a road rage incident -- the guy got out of his car and came over to start screaming and banging on her windows, and she took out her cellphone, typed in 911, and turned it to the window. The guy backed off.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a good one.

[identity profile] word-herder.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Road rage is frightening to behold. I experienced something similar when I was nice and let someone make a left in front of me during rush hour traffic. Oh my goodness. It was almost enough to prevent me from ever being a nice driver again. Some people are IDIOTS.

[identity profile] darth-snarky.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember learning something similar. I also grew up in a neighborhood with lots of one-way streets, so those were really helpful (as pedestrians don't need to follow one-way signs).

(My family also helped by owning an enormous, black, wolf-like dog, that I walked everywhere when I was a kid.)

Not to always pop in with silly X-Files related news, but apparently this is because it's an unfinished poster, and has been yanked from the sites after being unintentionally leaked. I for one think this is a good thing, since whatever graphic arts dropout they allowed to attack it with Photoshop like that really ought to be shot. The concept is great, but um... Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are still attractive people. Can they at least look real on a poster? That would be nice!

Wow, I'm glad your cousin is okay and that things didn't escalate into outright ugliness as opposed to horrible creepiness. I had a guy try to coerce me into his car when I was a college sophomore and I totally realized, looking back, that it was because my small build and baby face probably made him think I was closer to ten than to twenty. He just KEPT trying to get me to get in his car, and when I finally flipped him the bird, he started howling unintelligible abuse at me. ::shudders::

Wal-Mart has never been the safest place in the world, alas. My sister was once verbally assaulted/stalked/intimidated/whatever the word for it is in their parking lot, in front of her children -- by one of their employees.

He wasn't a bright man. It ended badly for him, what with the security camera footage and all.
