I read the novel, and it's a house in the middle of the lake. I mean, I was thinking ugly wallpaper and stuff in the house, it's got a big dining table and everything, but not nearly as ornate as the movie one. For one, the bookPhantom sleeps in a COFFIN. I don't think that would have done well for the mood though. "Here Christine, you've fainted dead away, so I'll put you in my bed coffin...get it, dead away? Hah hah hah." and then she would wake up in a coffin and freak out. So I understand the change. But the movie lair was seriously like "Erik's lair playset! Comes with Christine and Erik action figure, the Christine with fainting action! Batteries and singing not included, some decorating required."
