Speaking on the issue of displaced animals, I got this from Harris County Rabies and Animal Control today:
I thought you would like an update on the animal situation at the Dome. Yesterday we had about 30 animals transported to the Dome. This morning we have 300. We have asked the Incident Commander for a temporary shelter for 500 animals at the Dome. We are in the process of gathering volunteers to take shifts to do intake on the animals.
We are fortunate in that the SPCA has mutual agreements with other agencies out of the area to help take animals and that Harris County PHES employees have been trained in Public Health Preparedness. If anything brings home the need to plan for pets in a disaster --- this should do it. Right now we're waiting to see if the Dome will be taking in any more refugees or if they will be diverted to Dallas & San Antonio. We'll keep you posted....
