Y'all, I think I'm going to cry. We've been having awful thunderstorms the last couple of weeks, and of course I have to sit around and twiddle my thumbs with the major appliances off when that happens, because (as you will recall), I just lost a DVD player to a power surge (and yes, it was plugged into a surge protector. That was the one where 10,000 people in town lost power, if you're local and remember the headlines), and we have previously lost a TV and another DVD player to lightning strikes as well.

So today it's wet but sunny, and I'm working on the book and all, and--the power goes out. For an hour. I lose my work (not much), and my monitor starts fritzing out. It takes me another half hour to coax it back to life. It's like I can't win, no matter what.

P.S. For some reason, the last line of this article really did make me start crying.

Howard Stern had the actual 911 call audio clip and it made me cry in the car. So horrible.

[identity profile] milferd.livejournal.com 2005-03-31 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep lost my computer to a direct hit on the power poll outside my house in 95. And yep had surge protection.

As power rep. said when asked why they could not keep lighting from taking out cameras monitoring a bridge, “You have any idea how powerful a lightning bolt is?”

After all the bolt already traversed the atmosphere air gap from the cloud to the ground.

Oh god...that poor child. I'm glad the fucker killed himself. >:(

Surge protectors

(Anonymous) 2005-03-31 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The surge protectors they sell for $5 are pretty much worthless. Circuit City's do sell surge protectors that "protect" against higher levels of surges for $70 - $100. Not really worth it to protect a $75 DVD player but something to consider for $1,000+ TV's and such. Still when there's a thunderstorm and I am home I unplug the TV and computer because that still won't protect against direct lightening strikes.

It's when these things don't make you cry you need to start worrying. You're okay.

I had the same reaction to the article.

The 9-1-1 transcript is here (http://www.nbc6.net/news/4331462/detail.html). It nearly made me cry, too.

The line that got me was "Their daughter, Tia, was not harmed." Talk about irony.

Good luck with the electronics. (Don't suppose you have laptop that you can use on battery power in the meantime?)

Gah. Hang in there, Cleo. May the gods of power take mercy on you. You deserve a break.

And yeah, I saw the 911 story today, and the whole thing is just awful. Why is it the best and the brightest are usually tainted by tragedy?

[identity profile] brittanygrace.livejournal.com 2005-03-31 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GEEZE!

I'm a news reporter so yesterday I heard about that story all day long. I even heard the 911 tape. It broke my heart into 10 million pieces.

Not just you

[identity profile] inuit3877.livejournal.com 2005-03-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just you, Cleo. That article is heartbreaking.

I have no idea why, but the fact that she knew what a deputy was made me start blubbering.

I'm just glad the sorry S.O.B. didn't find her.

That's a very, very sad article. It's one of those weird-mood days.

Don't lose any more electronics, okay?

[identity profile] ginmar.livejournal.com 2005-04-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Just to be totally shallow, if you have any interest in getting DVDs from elsewhere in the world, get an Audiovox. They're easy to code hack so you can buy stuff from any other region and play it on your machine.

That little girl----Damn. She must have had amazing parents, and....

[identity profile] elbiesee.livejournal.com 2005-04-01 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Man... today is the kind of day that, for no reason whatsoever, is messin' with my emotions. That little girl... absolutely amazing. I think she'll be okay, eventually.

We have storms here too (Oklahoma), and sometimes all you can do is unplug everything and read a book by flashlight until it passes.

*shudders*

[identity profile] maramala.livejournal.com 2005-04-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
That article was an exact transcription of a story I once wrote. Creepy.

Hope your day gets better. Consider this a minor setback. ;)

P.S. For some reason, the last line of this article really did make me start crying.

Roger Ebert said that bravery and goodness are more moving than sadness. The 9/11 stories that most affected me were not the stories of the people who died, but the ones about the people who saved other people, and the ones who kept doing their job through the disaster. I think that's what makes the last line so touching.
