(no subject)

Y'all, I think I'm going to cry. We've been having awful thunderstorms the last couple of weeks, and of course I have to sit around and twiddle my thumbs with the major appliances off when that happens, because (as you will recall), I just lost a DVD player to a power surge (and yes, it was plugged into a surge protector. That was the one where 10,000 people in town lost power, if you're local and remember the headlines), and we have previously lost a TV and another DVD player to lightning strikes as well.

So today it's wet but sunny, and I'm working on the book and all, and--the power goes out. For an hour. I lose my work (not much), and my monitor starts fritzing out. It takes me another half hour to coax it back to life. It's like I can't win, no matter what.

P.S. For some reason, the last line of this article really did make me start crying.

=(

Yeah, I am in the area of the time when that huge power-outage occurred too...my cpu got fried and I had to replace a couple of things too =( don't cry!

I heard that phone conversation on the news yesterday. I got chills. There's no way I'd be that composed NOW, let alone as a 5-year-old. Poor girl. :-(

*hugs* Thunderstorms make me want to cry, too, just because I'm afraid of them. Stupid destructive forces of nature that we can't control. ;)

that sucks about the power outages...i always hate it when power goes out

i heard the actual phone call from the little girl on the news too...it was amazing how she handled it...and the whole thing is just horrible...i couldn't imagine that happening to me when i was 5

Oh, man, that little girl? Right after I just watched Grave of the Fireflies (http://imdb.com/title/tt0095327/).

Pooey, thunderstorms.

Any chance of a laptop? It would at least let you get work done.

just to let you know, sometimes older houses dont have a grounding stake. this stake allows access enegery(ie. lightning) to be absorbed into the earth. One way you can check is to see if all of your outlets have the third grounding plug. the adapters dont work, they just look prety. If your house dosent have the grounding stake, contact a local electrician they would help you out for some outragous fee. sorry for your electronic losses. i feel your pain sister

Gah...I'm sorry to hear about the no-fun-stormy-electronics rodeo...My dad is obsessed with our unplugging all the computers, etc, in storms..even though we have surge protectors. Your near-daily funniness is on the list of things that keep me barely sane, so your storm-pain is my storm-pain..

That article was soooo sad...I can only hope that the little girl eventually remembers little of the event as she gets older. It sounds as though she is very smart for her age...hopefully she will recover well with as little therapy as possible.

That is sad. : (

*hug*

God never gives you more than you can handle unless he opens a window first. Or something.

Um, um, that little girl has the same name as my sister. *wants to go hug her sister now in a moment of freakish older-sister protectiveness. doesn't want to see her sister's name in context with things like that EVER AGAIN.*

We had a similar situation here. A little boy called the fire department to say that his appartment was on fire. His father was drunk at the time but managed to take the receiver and tell them that everything was under control. The firefighters came anyway, put out the fire that was all but under control... they saved the father but sadly the boy died...

They played the phonecall on the news, it was so sad. I can't believe such a thing could happen.
