yeah, it's a nice circular plot: 16 years ago, Sam and Lenny are in the South Pacific for the US Navy and overhear a broadcast of these numbers. 16 years ago, Rousseau and her team heard the same broadcast and got shipwreck on Evil Island.
Sam takes the numbers, plays them at some bean game and wins gobs of money. Lenny, apparently, goes home, knows what's going on with Sam, and ends up crazy. [Makes me wonder if he, too, did something with the numbers that landed him in the House 'o' Crazy].
Hurley picks up the numbers from Lenny [and ditto that "Hurley was a resident there" - I didn't catch it at first, but it makes sense. Esp. Hurley's anger when people say he's nutters], plays them in the Lottery and wins big time. Massive bad luck follows him, culminating with the plane crashing back on the Island, the original source of the numbers.
