According to the Widow Toomey, Sam and Lenny were in the US Navy together (yes, US Navy) when they were assigned to listen on some sorta radio transmission over the Pacific for some sort of something. I dunno, Soviet transmissions? ("Sam hated the job.") One day they got something other than static, and it was the radio broadcast of the numbers repeating over and over.
