If you recall his first flashback we learn that Sawyer lost his parents to a con-man's scheme. {Basically his father killed his mother and then killed himself}.

He wrote The Letter where he told the con-man, name Sawyer, that he ruined his life.

The setup was Other Guy told Sawyer that Shrimp Truck man was the original 'Sawyer' the man who killed his parents.
