Good grief, you're right. It does kill some of the belivability of the movie...unless they fix it in the personalities of the characters, I'd rather take the dark and mysterious Phantom. (I mean, he'll give you about as much freedom as the nobility from that time would...and he's less likely to be dallying with the kitchen staff when he gets bored...) True, he's a madman, but at least he's your madman.
